VANQUISH | CAMPAIGN

Platinum Games is Shinji Mikami’s (Resident Evil, Dino Crisis) studio and it was a pleasure to work with them on Vanquish. Heavily influenced by manga sci-fi such as Gundam it was a game that has become influential on the gameplay of cover shooters. It was also quite traditional, and very hard.

The gameplay heavy campaign for Japan was very confusing in the west - and this was a major issue for Sega. My job in these trailers was to create a campaign that communicated the great elements of this game to the western audience with clarity.

My intention, crucially, was not to hide the Japanese-ness. Instead, we tried to highlight the style in a way that was understandable and appealing to a western audience. I’ve subsequently used this approach on other Japanese developed games such as Nioh and Binary Domain.
